The helo's skids were wider than the truck bed! Fortunately the Missouri Army National Guard had encountered this problem before and had welded up a special metal rack to fit onto the truck bed and contain the wider helicopter skids. All chained down with "Boomers". Additional nylon straps in place.

Missouri Army National Guard Pilot CW3 Don C. Thomson (me). I'm also the Historian/Curator of the Seawolf Assn. I took a day of leave to come down, help with the loading, and represent the SEALs & Seawolves. I drove the truck driver to a hardware store to buy chains and "Boomers" as we couldn't get enough tension on the nylon straps.

This helicopter was originally retained as an important full bird colonel in Missouri wanted to put it on a pole at the State Guard Headquarters. It thus became knows as "Ed's Sled" after sitting around for a few years. He had flown the B models in Vietnam and hisname is Ed. The problem was the Chief of Staff in Missouri wanted a UH-1H on the pole and he eventually won out.

I've had my eye on this "B" Model for the last six years. We beat out the Ozark hanger of the confederate air force by One Day. That was a close call.
