  8. 2002.0023.56 - B&W photo of Lt. Com E. P. Clayton, Commanding officer of UDT 21, accepting the sword of the Japanese commander of the fortifications at Cape Futtsu at the entrance of Tokyo Bay, in an informal surrender ceremony on August 29, 1945.

    A few hours later the Japanese at Cape Futtsu marched out onto their parade ground in immaculate uniforms, opened ranks and laid their rifles on the ground in an effort to surrender to UDT 21. Tears were running down their faces. They were told to pick their rifles up and plan to surrender to the US Marines the next day when they first came ashore.

    Lieutenant Commander Edward P. Clayton, Commanding Officer UDT-21 accepts the Samurai sword of surrender from a Japanese Officer only one day after U.S. troops arrived at Tokyo's airport. This was the "first" surrender of the war, but LCDR Clayton was later required to give up the sword, since the first surrender could only be made to General Douglas MacArthur.
